L. Pollak – Girls at the Fountain in Roman Costume. Oil on canvas, signed lower right. Rome, late 19th century.
A fascinating and large oil painting on canvas, signed "L. Pollak Roma" and executed by the Polish artist active in Rome during the second half of the 19th century, Leopold Pollak (1865–1920), known for the luminous quality of his genre scenes.
The work depicts three young women in traditional Roman attire, gathered around a water fountain in a woodland setting. The background is rendered with elegant naturalism, while the female figures stand out for the softness of their expressions, theatrical gestures, and the rich chromatic variety of their costumes, inspired by Roman folk dress.
The composition is built on harmonious diagonals and exchanges of glances between the protagonists, creating a silent yet engaging narrative. Particularly remarkable is the quality of the light, which models the bodies with warm, transparent tones, and the aged patina that has given the painting a regular and captivating craquelure — a mark of authenticity.
Important and imposing original 19th-century frame in carved and gilded wood, with vegetal motifs and fluted profiles, adding strong decorative value.
The work is in excellent overall condition, with minor signs of age consistent with its period. A collectible piece, ideal for historical interiors, romantic settings, and grand residences.
