Large, Risqué Snuffbox "monk In Prayer" Late 18th/early 19th Century
Large carved fruitwood snuffbox with glasse eyes depicting a praying monk.
It is a bawdy object.
The snuffbox opens at the back to reveal a tobacco compartment.
It also opens at the front, and the monk's genitals emerge, activated by a spring.
The spring has probably been replaced.
It works perfectly. Height: 27 cm. A very fine piece of folk art with a beautiful patina.
Datable to the late 18th or early 19th century.
