"Green Shagreen Case, 18th Century "
Green shagreen leather case, late 18th century. Small grain shagreen (sea dog) case, dyed green (French School, late 18th century). Shagreen is an exceptional fish leather, used since ancient times in Japan as early as the 18th century. The name "shagreen" actually dates back to the 18th century, named after the first artisan of excellence in Europe, Mr. Jean-Claude Galluchat, master leatherworker to King Louis XV. Shagreen, dyed green, was highly prized in the 18th century (Madame de Pompadour was very fond of it). This craftsman became so famous for covering the rarest objects with this fish skin that his name became synonymous with the material.
