Six Louis XVI Chairs Stamped Tilliard.
These six beautiful chairs, upholstered in gold-colored leather, have square backs. The seats rest on four turned, fluted, and reeded legs. The front connecting blocks are finely carved with a small flower, and the rails and uprights are molded. In good overall condition, they are stamped with the mark of Jean Baptiste Tilliard, though the stamp is more or less decipherable. Jean Baptiste Tilliard II was the son of Jean Baptiste Tilliard I. He became a master cabinetmaker in 1752 and took over his father's workshop in 1764 when the latter retired at the age of 78. They used the same stamp, and it is not easy to attribute the Louis XV chairs to one or the other. However, the Louis XVI chairs are all attributed to the son; their production is renowned and of very high quality. Both were "carpenters to the Crown Furniture Repository." Jean Baptiste Tilliard II continued his work until the Revolution, when he ceased production; he died in 1797. These chairs, in excellent condition, have been recently renovated and reupholstered. A few minor restorations are noticeable here and there, and the seat rails have been reinforced in places. It is a high-quality, well-executed piece. Louis XVI period. Height 90 cm, seat height 46 cm, width 43 cm, depth 41 cm.
