Country Navigation Chest Of Drawers, 19th Century, Wood And Gilt Brass Fittings
A 19th-century navigation chest of drawers featuring a wood with a pronounced grain and inset gilt bronze mounts. The piece displays simple lines, functional proportions, and the characteristic construction of campaign furniture. The top is covered in its original green leather, tooled in gilt, providing a balanced contrast to the wood and brass details. The corner reinforcements, retractable handles, and two-part structure reflect its practical design intended for travel. Chests and secretaries of the Campaign period were the travel companions of British military officers. These officers, often from the upper classes, commissioned this type of furniture for their campaigns abroad, in India, Ceylon (the Raj), or throughout the British Empire. Accustomed to a certain level of comfort, they considered it essential to carry their necessities with them. This chest of drawers integrates easily into both traditional and contemporary interiors. The drawers offer functional storage, as shown in the photographs. Condition: The original green leather shows signs of wear consistent with the age and use of the piece, giving it an authentic character. For those who prefer a refreshed surface, we offer professional replacement by our master craftsman for an additional €500. A practical and historically interesting example of 19th-century country furniture.
