Easter Fortnight. Paris. 1777
It's hard to imagine today the importance of Easter celebrations in the 18th century. Indeed, this central culmination of the Christian liturgy unfolded through a succession of services extending day and night over fifteen days. This breviary describes in detail this succession of services and the prayers that accompanied them. Of particular note is Quasimodo Sunday, actually the second Sunday of Easter, whose introit begins with "quasi modo geniti infantes," like newborn babies... This work was printed in Paris in 1777 in French and Latin to facilitate understanding of the prayers. It is in near-perfect original condition (gilt edges, new period binding!).
