Jean-roger Sourgen (1883–1978) Pond In The Landes Pine Forest
Pond in the Landes Pine Forest Oil on canvas – 51 × 46 cm Signed lower left JR Sourgen This oil on canvas beautifully captures one of Jean-Roger Sourgen's favorite subjects: the Landes forest and its tranquil ponds. The composition is organized around a clearing opening onto a calm body of water, framed by tall, slender pines, typical of the Landes region, whose vertical trunks structure the space and naturally guide the eye towards the horizon. The palette is soft and harmonious, dominated by grayish greens, warm browns, and milky blues. The sky, animated by round, luminous clouds, is subtly reflected in the pond, creating a peaceful and almost meditative atmosphere. The brushwork is supple and legible, without excessive impasto, revealing a controlled, structured, and serene painting. Here we find all of Sourgen's talent for capturing the soul of the Landes landscape: the verticality of the pines, the diffused light filtering through the foliage, the hushed silence of the still water, and this feeling of untouched nature, outside of time. The work is signed, painted in oil on its original canvas, mounted on a wooden frame, and is in good overall condition.
