Remarkable pair of antique wooden torchère angels, carved and polychromed in Italy during the late 16th century (circa 1570–1600), and of probable Venetian or North-Central Italian origin.
The two figures, originally conceived with wings, represent candle-bearing angels sculpted in the refined mannerist style of the period: elongated proportions, dynamic yet rigid drapery, and serene, idealised facial features. The polychromy, largely original, displays mineral, matte tones typical of Renaissance pigments.
These sculptures were likely part of a liturgical furnishing, positioned beside a minor altar or devotional niche. The authentic patina and the coherence of the carving make this pair an important example of Italian Renaissance wood sculpture.
The torchères come with a certificate of provenance, attesting to their historical background and antiquarian authentication.
A rare and highly decorative pair, perfect for collectors and for interiors seeking the presence and elegance of genuine Renaissance sacred art.
