"Follower Of Gerrit Lundens, The Hot Hand Game, Oil On Panel, 17th Century"
Small oil painting on panel depicting a playful and popular scene. It shows a group of people gathered in an inn playing the game of hot hand. This pastime involves designating a "victim" who bends across the lap of one of the players and holds their hand out behind them so that the other participants can slap it. The aim is for the victim to guess who slapped their hand, and if they succeed, the "culprit" takes their place.
The artist is probably a follower of Gerrit Lundens (1622-1686), a Dutch painter primarily known for his popular genre scenes, who produced several paintings on the theme of the hot hand game. He also painted a copy of Rembrandt's famous "The Night Watch," which is now in the National Gallery, London.
It should be noted that the painting has been cut and resized at a later date on the left and right sides.
Good overall condition.
17th century.
