Fashion sketch – pareo, 1996.
Original mixed media drawing on card stock, signed and dated (1996). Dimensions: 29.5 x 20.9 cm. Provenance: Collection of Madame Mottard. A superb and rare fashion sketch, finely executed, by the master of haute couture for the launch of his swimwear under the "Karl Lagerfeld" brand. The designer generously presented this drawing, as a gesture of gratitude, to Madame Mottard, a ready-to-wear boutique manager who contributed to the launch of the designer's swimwear designs on the French Riviera. In 1984, Karl Lagerfeld founded his own brand under the name "Karl Lagerfeld," which changed its name in 1998 to Lagerfeld Gallery. A boutique was opened in Saint-Germain-des-Prés in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. In 2004, the brand was acquired by the American company Tommy Hilfiger. Two years later, it reverted to its original name, although Karl Lagerfeld remained the creative director. The brand's first runway show took place in New York that same year, closing Fashion Week. The following year, Lagerfeld organized a Parisian show at the Sorbonne. He also launched the "K" line, featuring more casual and affordable pieces.
