Pair Of Candlesticks. Sculptor: Alfred Daubrée
A rare and elegant pair of five-light
candelabra, dating from the Napoleon III period (circa 1850) and in the
Louis XV style, crafted in patinated and gilt bronze. The set is
attributed to the master bronze sculptor Daubrée, whose
signature is clearly visible on the sculpture. A second mark, also
"Daubrée," visible on the gilt elements, confirms the provenance
from this workshop, renowned for the finesse of its chasing and the
exceptional quality of its castings. French sculptor Alfred
Daubrée (1817–1885)
A patinated bronze putto, seated on a naturalistic rock, holds a woven basket at arm's length. The modeling of the body is distinguished by its great softness: full flesh, supple gestures, and a focused expression. The warm brown patina highlights the volumes and creates a harmonious contrast with the brilliant gilding of the upper section. From the basket rises a profusion of leafy stems and large trumpet-shaped flowers, crafted entirely in gilt bronze and finely chased with remarkable attention to detail.
The five light arms unfold organically, like climbing plants. The cups, shaped like lily calyxes, evoke abundant nature, an emblematic theme of the Rococo aesthetic.
The base, in richly chased gilt bronze, rests on four scrolled feet. It features a decoration of grid patterns, acanthus leaves, and shell motifs, typical of the Louis XV ornamental vocabulary. The ample plinth ensures perfect stability while lending the whole a strong sculptural presence.
