"Mary Gregory Enameled Glass Box, Child's Decoration, Late 19th Century"
A very pretty little enameled glass box by Mary Gregory*, decorated with a child, dating from the 19th century. *Mary Gregory (1856-1908) was an American artist specializing in enameled glass. From 1880 to 1890, she worked with her sister at the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company. She is known for depicting only Victorian-style children (dressed in sailor suits or crinolines) in her work, amidst natural settings, somewhat resembling Kate's illustrations, and more rarely, babies. Her enameled pieces, in a milky white, carafes, sugar bowls, vases, and salt cellars in amethyst, light green, dark green, amber, light blue, turquoise, and a very typical and recognizable cobalt blue, were created by applying enamel to glass. Its European production was mainly manufactured in the glassmaking towns of Bohemia, primarily by the Hahn glassworks in Gablonz, and to a lesser extent by the Moser glassworks in Karlsbad, and continued until the 1950s.
