"Martin Varnished Wig Box"
A Louis XV period, mid-18th century, Martin varnish wig box. The base is molded and the lid is domed. The lid features an elaborate decoration: a scene with two figures painted in gilt, framed by scrolling foliage and colored flowers. The front and sides are painted with floral and foliate motifs. The colors are still very fresh, and the decoration displays a wealth of finely painted details. The interior is painted red. It has a chased bronze knob, keyhole, and hinges. The original lock is functional and fitted with an antique key. Dimensions: W 29.5 x D 22 x H 11 cm
