Portrait on Slate of Pope Innocent XI (Benedetto Odescalchi), 17th century
Technique: Oil on slate ( Black stone)
Dimensions
14 × 11.5 cm.
Work to be restored. This small-format portrait, painted in oil on slate, represents Benedetto Odescalchi, elected pope under the name Innocent XI in 1676. The choice of a stone support reflects a Baroque taste of the seventeenth century for experimenting with different materials, appreciated for the depth of dark backgrounds and the subtle rendering of tonal contrasts.
The pontiff is depicted half-length, with his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing, wearing the red mozzetta and camauro. The face, clearly marked by age, is rendered with careful observation: expressive wrinkles and a restrained modeling convey a sober, concentrated presence, free from idealization. This measured approach corresponds well to the historical image of Innocent XI, whose pontificate is traditionally associated with moral rigor and austerity.
The paint handling, built up through small, dense brushstrokes and aimed at a naturalistic description of the sitter, is particularly evident in the treatment of the face and the beard, revealing the work of an experienced hand, fully aligned with the language of the High Baroque of the seventeenth century.
Condition
The painting requires restoration. The pictorial surface shows numerous losses and abrasions, partly due to limited adhesion of the paint layer to the slate support. Despite this condition, the face of the pontiff and a substantial part of the figure remain clearly visible, allowing the quality of execution and the finesse of the modeling to be fully appreciated.
On the reverse, the number “1783” is present; this should be understood as an inventory or collection number rather than a date.
