"Jean Lugassy - Ceramic Vase"
Pyrite stoneware vase with a "tea powder" glaze. Wood-fired kiln. Circa 1960-70. Jean Lugassy, a French post-war artist and potter based in Saou in the Drôme region, created unique stoneware pieces, fired at high temperatures in a wood-fired kiln. He explored high-temperature glazes with precision: deep iron black, snowy white, beige, yellow ochre, iron and copper reds, deep blue, and turquoise. His sources of inspiration ranged from ancient Chinese masters to major figures in contemporary ceramics: Daniel de Montmollin, René Ben Lisa, and Philippe Lambercy. Each work reflected this dual lineage, between tradition and personal exploration.
