Planter - Earthenware - Malicorne - émile Tessier - C. 1930
Artist: émile Tessier
A Malicorne earthenware planter decorated with vine tendrils, by the renowned ceramist Emile Tessier (1887-1971), a native of Malicorne. From the age of nine, he was able to operate a potter's wheel. He apprenticed as a decorative painter under the tutelage of Léon Pouplard. In 1924, he founded his own factory, which would later become the Malicorne Art Pottery (FAM). He sold openwork white earthenware. His profound knowledge of ceramic art and his modern approach enabled him to establish one of the finest potteries in Western France. The entrepreneur drew his inspiration from the earthenware traditions of great, now-vanished centers such as Rouen and Strasbourg. He reinterpreted their motifs with his own unique touch. The company would eventually employ up to one hundred people and be run by his family until his death in 1971. Our piece fits perfectly within the oeuvre of Emile Tessier. Circa 1930.
