François-Charles Cachoud, nicknamed the Corot of the Night, was born on October 23, 1866, in Chambéry. He was the son of a baker in the city.

He began his painting apprenticeship under Benoît Molin at the Chambéry School of Painting.

In 1883, he entered the Corps of Bridges and Roads, then attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1889.
He lived in Montparnasse and shared the life of an artist in Paris with his friend, the Chambéry sculptor Mars Vallett (1869-1957). He became a student of Jules-Élie Delaunay and then, above all, of Gustave Moreau. His work oscillates between landscapes, still lifes, and intimate portraits. His effects of night and chiaroscuro made him famous. In 1891, he
exhibited "A Morning Effect" at the Salon des Artistes Français. The following year, he painted Sunset at Vanves,
which has since been preserved at the Chambéry Museum, following a bequest from the artist.
Married to Rosine Veleine, originally from Pas-de-Calais, he was also inspired by her landscapes,
and The Hour of the Cricket, his work shown outside of competition at the 1902 Salon,
was purchased by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Appointed painter to the Ministry of the Navy, in 1901 he created the decorative panels for theocean liner La Savoie and produced advertising posters
and decorative panels for the P.L.M. railway company. It was only from 1905 onwards that his style shifted towards nocturnal rural motifs, such as the series of Nocturnes in 1908, 1911, and 1914, exhibited at the Parisian gallery Georges-Petit, which garnered critical acclaim and were subsequently acquired by museums. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français until 1940 and became a member of the committee.Around 1913, he became friends with Victor Charreton, a
landscape painter of the Lyon school, who was also drawn to the effects of twilight.
