A compact Chinese scholar’s libation cup carved in warm, naturally fibrous organic material, dating from the late Qing to Republic era, c.1880–1930. The silhouette is elegant and restrained: a flaring rim above an archaistic band of taotie masks and scrollwork, with three small sculpted felines at the shoulder. The thin walls show natural translucency, adding depth and colour when lit.
This type of vessel draws directly on the vocabulary of early Chinese ritual bronzes while remaining perfectly scaled for the scholar’s desk.
