Bronze Crucifix by Master IB, 17th Century
This crucifix bears a mark at the base of the crossbar depicting a crowned compass framed by the initials I and B and surmounting a small flower, all within an oval frame. This is the mark of Master IB, a master bronze founder active in the Bassigny and Hautes-Alpes regions between 1620 and 1670. His signature can be found on processional crosses (churches of Vallouise, Allonne, Bordes-Pillot, and Rosoy-sur-Amance), as well as on smaller crucifixes like this one. (Source: B. Bergbauer, French Processional Crosses from the Renaissance to the Revolution)
The cross rests on an oval base bordered by an openwork frieze, decorated in relief with angels and foliage, and surmounted by a heart-shaped knot placed between two collars. Each end of the cross is adorned with an angel's head within a leafy wreath. The Christ figure is based on a late 16th-century French model, used by Master IB in all his works.
Excellent condition, with a small casting hole on Christ's abdomen.
