"Big Maedate ,shishi Signed Yoshimishi Edo "
Large gilded wooden maedate, with glass eyes, signed Yoshimishi. It depicts a shishi, guardian lion or Chinese lion, with a fierce appearance, open mouth, visible fangs, and a spiraling mane. Its dynamic posture evokes movement and power. It symbolizes protection against evil spirits. It was used by samurai wishing to display an imposing presence. This type of maedate was popular during the Edo period. Yoshimishi was a renowned lineage of swordsmiths. The shishi is gilded with gold leaf except for the head, which was either retouched or painted with gold paint from the beginning.
