"The Carnelian And Agate Tree"
The Ornamental Bonsai: "The Carnelian and Agate Tree" (China, Late 19th - Early 20th Century) This decorative bonsai is a piece of Chinese craftsmanship, often referred to as a Hardstone Tree or "Treasure Tree" (Cai Shu), designed to bring good fortune and prosperity. The Branch and Flowers: The flowers and fruits are meticulously carved from semi-precious stones, primarily carnelian (for the brownish-orange tones) and agate (for the lighter, translucent petals). The flower centers are formed from contrasting yellow pistils. The Trunk: The trunk is textured to mimic the gnarled, aged bark of a miniature tree, typical of bonsai aesthetics. The branches are joined with metal wires. The Pot (Planter): The tree is fixed in a richly decorated rectangular pot made of cloisonné enamel (Jingtai Lan). The pot features a bright and colorful design on a lime green background, centered on a stylized lotus flower motif in vibrant colors (yellow, orange, blue). It dates from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican Period and was used for interior decoration.
