"Henry Louis Scott. Fishermen At Sea"
Henri Louis Scott de Plagnolle (1846-1884), born in Le Havre, was an artist whose reputation was overshadowed by that of his son, Georges Bertin Scott, who was a prominent painter and military illustrator at the beginning of the 20th century. He led a brilliant career, having studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, been a member of the Société des Artistes Français, and won prizes at the Salons. Few of his paintings are known to exist; he depicted life on the Breton coast or major events (the Cahors Museum holds his painting of Gambetta's funeral), with a beautiful treatment of light and a panoramic view. To be perfect, our painting requires slight restoration and flattening, as an old relining is causing visible tension. Upon request, I can entrust it to my conservator, who will carry out the work perfectly. Signed lower left.
