Paul Merwart, painter of the colonies in 1896 and marine painter in 1899, traveled to Tunisia in 1899. He likely attended the inauguration of the port works at Sousse on April 25, 1899, by Camille Krantz (1848-1924), Minister of Public Works; Mr. Legrand, Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of the Interior; Mr. Mougeot, Under-Secretary of State for Posts and Telegraphs; and René Millet (1849-1919), French Resident General in Tunisia. The festivities drew 6,500 people.
