Tabula Scalata - Henry III And Death XVIII
French School, late 18th/early 19th century (in the style of the 16th century). Portrait of Henry III (1551–1589), King of France, and Death brandishing his arrow. Oil on panel with vertical optical louvers. H. 38 cm – W. 51 cm. The allegory of Death brandishing his arrow most likely refers to the violent death of Henry III, stabbed on August 2, 1589, by the Dominican friar Jacques Clément in his castle of Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
