Apollo, having mocked the god Eros (also known as Cupid), is about to suffer the latter's vengeance. Eros shoots Apollo with a golden arrow, causing him to fall madly in love with the nymph Daphne. Daphne, for her part, receives a leaden arrow, which disgusts her with love. A frantic quest ensues as Apollo tries to woo the nymph, who always refuses his advances. Finally, Apollo attempts to conquer her by force. To try to escape him, Daphne runs as fast as she can, but eventually she becomes exhausted and realizes that Apollo will catch her. She then asks her father, the river god Peneus, for help, and he transforms her into a laurel tree.
