France, late 19th - early 20th century.
Dimensions:
Height 92 cm, width 80 cm, depth 80 cm.
Excellent condition.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
An elegant and comfortable Transition style gondola bergère armchair in excellent condition, with new upholstery in embossed damask velvet. The model harmoniously combines the flowing, rustic lines of the later reign of Louis XV with the more ordered and symmetrical elements of the emerging classicism of Louis XVI.
Decoration and Style
The frame is made of walnut, one of the traditional woods used for Transition style furniture. The delicate carvings, fluting, and finely executed rosettes on the corner blocks emphasize the refined elegance of the model. The gondola-shaped back, with its deep, enveloping lines, creates a feeling of comfort while presenting a harmonious and balanced profile.
The upholstery is a richly worked damask velvet with a large vegetal motif, in a rose-gold palette enhanced with a terracotta hue that highlights the chair's historical character.
The back is covered in terracotta-toned velvet. The outer frame is accented by a line of bronze decorative nails, whose understated luster and regular rhythm add a further decorative dimension.
All the restoration and reupholstering work was carried out with impeccable professionalism.
Dating and Historical Context:
The Transition style (circa 1760–1775) marks the shift from Rococo to Classicism. Furniture from this period combines the lightness and grace inherited from the Louis XV era with more geometric lines, ordered volumes, and disciplined ornamentation, foreshadowing the Louis XVI style. Gondola-shaped bergère armchairs were designed for drawing rooms and boudoirs, where they were prized for their comfort, enveloping shape, and decorative elegance.
The armchair shown here is a remarkable example of high-quality historical replicas produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, faithful in their proportions and decoration to 18th-century models.
