Viennese Art-deco Living Room Set 1920-1930
Viennese Art Deco living room suite, circa 1920–1930
A rare and luxurious Art Deco salon set comprising a sofa, two armchairs, two lounge “gondola” chairs and an original matching table. Made in Vienna during the interwar period, the ensemble represents the highest level of Austrian craftsmanship of the early 20th century.
Design and materials
The strong silhouettes, sculptural lines and scroll-shaped armrests reflect the vocabulary of high Central European Art Deco. The structure is veneered in exceptional flamed walnut, arranged in perfect book-matched symmetry. The dramatic mirrored grain patterns, flawlessly aligned, indicate the hand of a master cabinetmaker — possibly from a prominent Viennese workshop such as Portois & Fix or Bamberger, though the precise maker remains unconfirmed.
Black-lacquered columns accentuate the vertical rhythm and create a striking contrast with the warm walnut surfaces. The French-polished finish gives the wood a deep, elegant sheen.
Condition and upholstery
The set is in very fine condition, fully restored with respect for period techniques. The upholstery has been newly executed in a rich midnight-blue velvet, harmonising beautifully with the walnut veneer. Both seating and backrests provide generous comfort, characteristic of luxurious Viennese furniture from the 1920s.
A rare and highly unusual model
Complete, coherent sets of this calibre — especially including two matching gondola chairs — are exceptionally scarce. The table is original to the suite, and the uniformity of the veneer work, its sculptural curves and the meticulous craftsmanship make this ensemble a truly distinguished piece.
