Woodcut from "Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam" by Bernhard von Breydenbach, 15th century

"Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam" is the first illustrated travel book ever printed. Published in German and Latin in Mainz in 1486, it describes Bernhard von Breydenbach's pilgrimage to Jerusalem and Mount Sinai and was a great success. The engravings are by Erhard Reuwich, who also made the pilgrimage.
This engraving, from a French edition published in 1488, shows the animals supposedly encountered: giraffe, crocodile, guinea pig, camel, salamander, ape-man, and unicorn. At the top of the page: "Ces bestes icy soubz portraites sont comme nous les avons vues en la terre saincte" (These beasts portrayed here are as we saw them in the Holy Land.)
On the back, colored with brown ink, is a lion holding a coat of arms in a Gothic architectural setting.

Good overall condition, both bottom corners clipped, some stains, brown ink stains on the back.

Height: 20.4 cm
Width: 14.9 cm
