Thailand, 1920s/1930s, in the Ayutthaya style (former Kingdom of Siam), a superb and important terracotta Buddha head presented on a base. The face, exquisitely detailed, reflects profound serenity. This high-quality piece is enhanced by a black lacquered metal base. Buddha wears a headdress known as the "one hundred and eight snails." According to legend, these snails saved Buddha's life while he was sitting in the sun, deep in meditation. The elegant protuberance visible at the top of the head corresponds to Buddha's topknot (unisha). Dimensions: Height 34 cm (including base) x Width 18 cm x Depth 18 cm.
