A Patchwork Quilt Of Silk Taffeta - Provence, Late 18th Century
Circa 1780-1800, Provence. A pretty, very lightweight quilted patchwork quilt of silk taffeta dating from the late 18th century. The window-like arrangement of yellow-green, cream, and green taffeta is framed by a checkered silk fabric from a dress. This striped and shaded taffeta is typical of 18th-century Nîmes production and is featured in the sample catalogs of the Musée du Vieux Nîmes. The quilt has a harmonious, quilted composition with double rows of quilting forming lozenges, the reverse side of which is made of the striped taffeta (stains and holes on the reverse). Note some fly bites and some fragility in the silk, particularly along the edges (see last photo). However, the piece remains easily usable for decorative purposes due to its lightness, a hallmark of the upper classes in Provence. It is in fair condition, but the colors are vibrant. A low price indeed. Dimensions: 146 cm x 132 cm
