China, Court Lady Known As Fat Lady In Ochre Grey Terracotta With Red Pigment Highlights.
China, terracotta depicting a court lady commonly known as a Fat Lady. It features ochre-gray hues with traces of white slip and highlights of red pigment. A moving representation of a court lady, she is shown kneeling, her head inclined slightly forward in a gesture of deference, her cherubic face imbued with gentle serenity. She wears a long, floor-length tunic with wide sleeves; the wooden hands are absent, as is common in such cases. The style corresponds to the corpus of court ladies from the Han Dynasty period (c. 206 BC - c. 220 AD), but without carbon-14 dating, we cannot confirm its date.
