Great 17th-century Mythological Painting, Venus In Vulcan's Forge

COD 11418

An imposing 17th-century Italian painting. Artwork oil on canvas depicts a fascinating mythological subject: Venus in Vulcan's Forge, a favorite iconography of Baroque painting. The goddess of love, Venus, captured in a sensual yet composed moment, emerges from a brown background thanks to luminous vermilion drapery, executed with extraordinary textural richness. At her feet is her son Cupid, with splendid wings, seemingly indicating Mars, Venus's lover, who is hiding behind a tree.

On the left, her husband, Vulcan, is depicted with a vigorous chiaroscuro, enhancing his musculature, intent on creating weapons and marvelous armor for the gods. Previously attributed to Pietro Liberi for its formal elegance and rich color palette, the artwork nevertheless displays characteristics consistent with the style of Federico Cervelli (1625-1700). A painter active in Venice in the second half of the 17th century, his style is captivating, dynamic, and sensual, characterized by intense naturalism and energetic brushwork. (The painting is currently not accompanied by an expert opinion, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs.)

A monumental painting, perfect for large reception rooms and ideal for collectors of Venetian mythological paintings. The spectacular 20th-century gilded wood frame is beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with relining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of color in some areas. Overall, it is in good condition. Interior dimensions: H 172 x W 134 cm.
