This fountain project could be likened to universal Concord reigning over all continents, symbolized by the union of the rivers. Under the gaze of the four river gods below—whose arrangement around a grotto is reminiscent of Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers in Rome—two women draped in classical style embrace in a sign of union or peace.
Such public monument projects were very fashionable in France at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries.
