Jean Lurçat (1892–1966) Glazed ceramic pitcher, France, circa 1950. This glazed ceramic pitcher perfectly illustrates the flamboyant and graphic style of Jean Lurçat, a major figure in contemporary tapestry and a versatile artist who also created bold ceramics in the 1940s and 50s. Its ample, slightly asymmetrical silhouette features a vibrant decoration of stylized foliage, drawn in deep black on a bright, glazed yellow background. The leaves, edged with a reddish-brown outline typical of Lurçat, seem to dance around the body of the pitcher, creating a powerful and almost musical visual rhythm.
