Authentic and rare gilt brass monstrance-reliquary, French or Italian work from the second half of the 19th century, in a highly developed Neo-Gothic style.
Description:
The piece is structured around a large radiating cross, painted red and gold, onto which are applied four quatrefoil medallions in blue and gold champlevé enamel representing the four Evangelists with their attributes:
• Saint John (eagle),
• Saint Luke (bull),
• Saint Matthew (angel),
• Saint Mark (lion).
The Central Shrine: At the center of the cross is a finely crafted, removable (screw-on) circular mount containing a relic of the True Cross: Ex Ligno S. Crucis, presented on a decorative background, with a fragment of wood fixed in the shape of a cross.
This shrine is closed by a seal. Episcopal inscription in red wax, perfectly legible, guaranteeing the integrity of the relic.
Dimensions: Height 22 cm x Width 12 cm x Depth 7 cm.
Condition:
• Gilding partially faded with age, without structural loss.
• Paintings of the radiating decoration in good overall condition.
• Enamels in very good condition, no visible cracks or chips.
• The central relic holder is removable (photos show the piece disassembled), which is typical of high-end 19th-century monstrances.
In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred work of art.
The relics it contains are not the object of the transaction, but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
