Buddha, Gilt Bronze, Kandyan Style, 18th Century
A gilt bronze statuette depicting Shakyamuni Buddha seated in a meditation posture (dhyāna mudrā), legs crossed and hands resting one on top of the other in his lap, a gesture associated with the pursuit of enlightenment. His face, with its regular and serene features, expresses the inner tranquility characteristic of Sri Lankan artistic tradition. His hair, composed of small, even strands, is surmounted by a stylized flame, a symbol of the Buddha's awakened wisdom. The exposed sole of his foot is decorated with fine carvings evoking stylized lotuses. The monastic robe, falling over his left shoulder, is rendered with a tight network of undulating folds, characteristic of the Kandyan style (17th–19th centuries). These rhythmic motifs, visible on both the front and back, evoke the flowing drapery of Sinhalese art. The base is decorated with a register of stylized petals, reminiscent of the lotus, an emblem of spiritual purity. The density of the piece (600 g for a height of 10.2 cm) testifies to a massive and traditional casting, typical of devotional bronzes intended for domestic altars or small shrines.
