Silver chalice and paten – France, 19th century – by Favier Frères, silversmiths. A Neo-Renaissance style chalice and paten in silver and gilt silver, crafted in repoussé, chased, engraved, and guilloché silver. The foot, with a cavetto profile and domed base, is adorned with three rosettes. On the base's base are three oval medallions depicting: Saint Peter; Christ on Calvary with the crown of thorns; and Christ on the cross with the Virgin Mary against a background representing Jerusalem. These medallions are separated by sheaves of wheat, vine tendrils, and reeds. The knop, in the shape of an inverted pear, is accompanied by rings and collars decorated with friezes of rosaries and rope motifs. Three Eucharistic plant symbols are also featured. The tulip-shaped chalice, entirely gilded, features an openwork false cup incorporating Christian symbols and three medallions in high relief depicting the busts of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Saint John. This chalice was made during the second quarter of the 19th century in the workshop of the silversmiths Favier Frères in Paris. It is distinguished by the richness of its decoration, which covers almost all surfaces except the cup, which was left smooth, as was the custom. Made of 950/1000 silver.
