Large Pair Of Wall Sconces After Gouthière. 19th Century

A large pair of gilt and patinated bronze wall sconces decorated with goat heads, birds, mascarons, and garlands of flowers and fruit.The thyrsus-shaped stem has a bluish patina, is decorated with laurel leaf friezes, and is surmounted by a pine cone.
Jean-Louis Prieur (1732-1795) created the original design for this model around 1780 (held in the library of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs).These wall sconces are usually attributed to Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813); however, as Jean-Pierre Samoyault writes, they could be by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843).
The Palace of Fontainebleau holds an identical pair, acquired from the Imperial Furniture Repository in 1806. The Cleveland Museum of Art also holds a pair.
