Pendant In Rock Crystal, Gold, And Polychrome Enamels. Spain, 17th Century

A superb octagonal pendant, crafted from finely faceted rock crystal, whose intricate cut explicitly evokes the diamond cut, lending the piece remarkable luminosity and striking optical depth.
The crystal is set in a gold mount enhanced with white, black, and green enamels, applied in small, regularly spaced reserves around the edge. The upper ring, also enameled and adorned with delicate floral motifs, testifies to the refinement of 17th-century Spanish goldsmithing. The pendant is hinged at the top, allowing the lid to be lifted and revealing the interior.
Inside is a beautiful micro-sculpture in carved wood, representing the crowned Virgin, executed with great finesse in the folds of the drapery and the expression (showing some small losses due to the fragility and age of the material).
The rock crystal exhibits a few minor flaws, consistent with its age:
– two small chips on the lower edge;
– A tiny chip on the upper edge, near the clasp;
– two slight internal scratches, one on the lid, the other in the medallion's basin;
– a superficial scratch on the right edge of the medallion, visible only when the piece is open;
– minor inclusions and cutting marks, characteristic of antique natural crystals.

A rare and precious piece, this pendant is a remarkable example of the convergence of goldsmithing, miniature sculpture, and private devotion. Examples of this type, produced in 17th-century Spanish workshops, are now extremely rare and highly sought after for the quality of their craftsmanship and their intimate, contemplative nature.
