18th-century flintlock carriage pistol, French work, circa 1760.
Carved wooden stock, swan-neck flintlock mechanism.
The grip is adorned with a silver medallion.
The barrel is engraved with a military motif: an iron gauntlet and a rapier.
The barrel is octagonal, then round with a blunted end.
These pistols were used for protection against carriage attacks in the 18th century.
Compact in shape, they could easily be concealed in a pocket.
