Louis XV Commode
Louis XV Commode – 18th Century. Stamped J.B. DETROULLEAU, master in 1767. An elegant commode with curved sides, opening to two drawers with crossbars, veneered in rosewood and violet wood, featuring a rich floral marquetry decoration enlivened by curves and counter-curves typical of the Rococo style. Beautiful marble top. This marble corresponds very precisely to Royal Red/Griotte Red marble (sometimes called Belgian Red Griotte in antique trade), frequently used on Parisian commodes of the 18th century. Royal Red marble top, molded with a corbel edge, from the period. Royal Red is a very common marble on Louis XV productions by master cabinetmakers, which reinforces the consistency with the Detroulleau stamp. Very fine ornamentation in finely chased gilt bronze, including drops, handles, keyhole escutcheons and sabots, as well as a Rococo cartouche highlighting the lower rail. Original locks in place. Oak back, drawer bottoms, and sides. Period joinery, visible dovetails, and a uniform antique patina. Louis XV commode – 18th century. Parisian work from the 18th century, bearing the stamp of J.B. Detroulleau, attesting to its being a piece by a master cabinetmaker.J.-B. DETROULLEAU — Parisian cabinetmaker, master in 1767Active in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Jean-Baptiste Detroulleau (also spelled Detroulleau/Detroulleau) belonged to the generation of cabinetmakers working between the end of the reign of Louis XV and the Transition to Louis XVI. His production mainly consisted of curved commodes, corner cabinets, tables, and secretaries veneered in precious woods (rosewood, violet wood, sometimes tulipwood), often adorned with floral marquetry and high-quality gilt bronze mounts. His stamp, J.B. DETROULLEAU, sometimes appears alongside the guild mark JME; it is usually found on a rear rail, the edge of a drawer, or the underside of the marble (frame). His pieces are characterized by harmonious curves, meticulous marquetry, and marble tops common for the period (notably Rouge Royal).
