"Pierra (pierre) Ambrogiani (1907-1985) Bouquet Of Flowers In A Blue Vase Oil On Panel"
Pierre Ambrogiani (1907-1985) Bouquet of Flowers in a Blue Vase Oil on canvas, signed lower left Dimensions: 55 × 46 cm Period frame, American-style textile and wood frame This floral composition is a fully accomplished example of the pictorial language of Pierre Ambrogiani, a master of colorful Provençal expression. The painting presents an explosive, liberated bouquet, composed of powerful, vibrant, and energetic brushstrokes, typical of the artist in his mature years. The intense blue, almost cobalt, vase provides a strong chromatic anchor, around which the white, yellow, orange, and red petals are arranged—or rather, clash. Ambrogiani works here with thick impasto, applied with a palette knife, using generous layers that structure the volume through the sheer energy of the gesture. We can clearly observe: the fleshy, sculpted paint, reminiscent of a Provençal Soutine; the use of pure, unmixed colors; the tension between the floral vibrancy and the deep, dark background, which acts as a dramatic backdrop; and the internal light produced by the very density of the pigments. The table, treated in warm ochres and vibrant greens, propagates a final wave of movement before disappearing beneath the floral dynamism. All these elements are entirely consistent with the artist's large floral still lifes, particularly those executed between 1955 and 1975. The canvas bears a signature “P. Ambrogiani” in the lower left corner, consistent with the handwriting observed on numerous authenticated oil paintings: cursive and slanted calligraphy, a quick but confident stroke, and the recurring use of the letter “P.” The entire technique, pictorial material, and chromatic spectrum confirm a coherent and stylistically sound attribution to Pierre Ambrogiani. This work falls squarely within the lineage of emblematic bouquets held in several French institutions: Musée Cantini, Marseille. There, one finds bouquets of intense chromatic boldness, applied in sculptural impasto, entirely comparable to the present canvas: the same use of color as an autonomous force, the same sensation of raw and flamboyant vitality. Musée de la Vieille Charité, Marseille. Several still lifes executed with a palette knife, with their strong presence, recall the dynamism of the presented bouquet: an overall swirling structure, a dialogue between deep blues and vibrant oranges/yellows. Musée Regards de Provence. His exhibited works show the same Mediterranean fervor, this blend of southern light and unique chromatic density. The strength of this canvas lies in: the luminous saturation, close to that of large museum-quality works, the floral exuberance of a Ambrogiani at his peak, using the mineral blue reminiscent of his vases from the 1960s. This work can therefore be placed within an aesthetic entirely compatible with the artist's museum production. Period frame. A simple yet perfectly suited presentation that complements the chromatic power of the canvas. Good overall condition, thick impasto intact, colors stable. No visible impasto and a homogeneous varnish. Pierre Ambrogiani (1907–1985) A major Provençal Expressionist painter, self-taught, and a friend of Giono, Sabatier, and Remacle, Ambrogiani established himself as one of the masters of Mediterranean color. Settling in Marseille, he developed an immediately recognizable style: pure colors, thick impasto applied with a palette knife, landscapes, still lifes, and Provençal scenes transfigured by an incomparable chromatic energy. Ambrogiani exhibited at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, the Musée Cantini, the Musée de Marseille, and in numerous national salons. His work is now collected for its vibrant colors and its central role in 20th-century Provençal Expressionism. This oil on canvas is a magnificent example of Ambrogiani's colorful virtuosity, with a bouquet of rare visual intensity, comparable to compositions held in Marseille museum collections. The presence of the The blue vase, vigorous impasto, and bursting light place this work among the artist's sought-after creations, those where color is used as a pure expressive force. A strong, vibrant, and highly representative piece, capable of fitting equally well into a collection of modern Mediterranean painting or into a contemporary interior where it will act as a visual magnet.
