Large Patinated Terracotta Head Of "pericles", Grand Tour, Italy, Late 19th Century.
Large patinated terracotta sculpture depicting a portrait of the famous Athenian statesman and orator Pericles (who lived in the 5th century BC). Exceptional in its size (more than twice life-size) and remarkable craftsmanship, this beautiful portrait of Pericles was entirely handcrafted and displays incredible attention to detail; each strand of hair or curl of beard was perfectly executed individually and then applied to the sculpture. The patina is truly splendid with traces of ancient polychromy. This piece has a truly strong and timeless decorative impact. A very fine Italian work, still in the spirit of the Grand Tour, dating from the late 19th century. NB: This piece is fragile and heavy, therefore shipping is not available.
