Hammond Typewriter, Model 12 Half-moon, 1905
Hammond typewriter, model 12 half-moon, 1905.
The Hammond typewriter is named after its designer, James Bartlett Hammond (1839-1913).
He believed that the typewriter should allow not only the use of different spellings but also characters from different alphabets and languages simply by replacing the character holder.
The machine was characterized by a bearing wheel-characters, that is to say a semi-circular band of hardened rubber (light metal later) which could be easily replaced.
The advantage of this machine compared to the competition: the use of several interchangeable shuttles with a different style, character and language.
The first patents for the Hammond typewriter were granted on February 3, 1880, practically the first year of production of the Hammond n.1.
In 1905, the Hammond N.12 was introduced, a machine that seemed almost identical to the previous models but which is differentiated by the introduction of a vibrator ribbon on the upper part of the turret which made it possible to make entirely visible what was tapped and no longer hidden by the central turret.
The Hammond no 12 was supplied with two different keyboards, ideal and universal.
The typewriter is in good condition and works, it is also complete with its oak wood case with printed instructions inside.
Is also present the original open-reel tape.
Metal plate with original brand Hammond on the left side and metal plate with European dealer name on the right side.
