A southern work from the mid-18th century.
An interesting composition centers around the pyre where Saint Lawrence was tied to the gridiron intended for his martyrdom.
The two figures appearing as executioners are reminiscent of certain figures often found around the scene of the Flagellation of Christ, particularly in the Mannerist school.
This martyrdom scene is richly animated with figures on several planes, against an architectural background featuring a temple and fortifications. The colors have remained fresh, and even if there is a certain naiveté in the execution, this oil on copper presents a martyrdom scene of undeniable charm.
There are a few small, old restorations.
A protective matte varnish has been applied.
The copper panel has been mounted on a fir panel for greater stability.
The 19th-century molded frame is made of wood and gilt stucco decorated with pearls and leaves. Laurel.
A beautiful composition on copper in fresh colors.
Dimensions:
33.5 cm long for the copper and 42 cm long with the frame.
25 cm high and 33 cm high with the frame.
