Gasparo Lopez (circle of)
(Naples, 1677 – Florence, 1732)
Called Gasparo dei Fiori
Gasparo Lopez was one of the leading Italian specialists in silent floral nature in the late Baroque period, active between Naples, Rome, and Florence. His works are characterized by rich floral compositions in elegant and scenic vases, the use of landscape backdrops with architectural elements in a contrast of light and shadow that highlights the volumes, and a careful naturalistic rendering of petals, leaves, and fruit. The present work exhibits many of these features, suggesting the circle of Lopez or his circle. The decorative painting was certainly intended to embellish aristocratic or bourgeois environments. The variety of flowers and fruits represents the beauty of nature, with possible symbolic value (vanitas, fertility, abundance).
The work is an oil on canvas and was likely relined around the mid-20th century.
