Wooden Sculpture Representing The "lion Of Lucerne"
Wooden sculpture representing the "Lion of Lucerne," designed by Bertel Thorwaldsen and carved by Lukas Ahorn between 1820 and 1821 in memory of the officers and hundreds of soldiers of the Swiss Guard who died in 1792 in the service of King Louis XVI when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace. Our example is a reproduction, likely made in the 1830s or 1840s as a keepsake.
