Nude and face study - graphite on thin paper - dated 1936, studio stamp. Traces of handling - sun damage in the upper left corner - yellowed right edge - a small tear on the left edge. Born in Yoyogi, Tokyo, in 1909. Descended from a line of samurai in the service of the Shimazu Clan. He dedicated himself to art (against the wishes of his parents, who wanted him to become a civil servant), under the influence of his uncle, Seiki Kuroda (1866-1924), one of the pioneers of Western-style painting in Japan. Taking refuge with his uncle after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, he discovered painting and drawing there. He enrolled in an art school, where he studied classical Western drawing from antique models. He began exhibiting at the Salon in 1933. Between 1940 and 1943, he served in Southeast Asia (Philippines, Java, etc.) as a marine painter. In 1949, he became a judge for the Kofukai Association (a pro-Western association) exhibition and participated in it from 1960 until his death. Shipped between shock-absorbing foam panels.
