Small 18th-century Arlesian Armchair In Painted Wood
A charming little Provençal armchair, known as an Arlesian straw-seated armchair, dating from the 18th century. The slatted, bracket-shaped back rises from fluted and carved uprights, while the turned baluster-shaped front legs are joined by a stretcher adorned with an elegant foliate motif, known as a "pedal." The seat rail and straw cover are finely carved, revealing delicate and characterful cabinetmaking. The antique patina, a green softened by time, harmonizes beautifully with the seat upholstery: an antique gilt damask, highlighted by a blue-gray braid that accentuates its contours. The generously thick cushion rests on the original, perfectly preserved straw seat—a rarity for this type of chair. A typical example of 18th-century Provençal furniture, combining rustic grace with the refinement of carved details.
