Painted Lead Fountain Mouth From The Louis XIV Period

This painted lead mask shows a bearded male face with expressive features. His radiating shell-shaped headdress echoes marine iconographic vocabulary and identifies our protagonist as an aquatic mythological figure, probably a triton. His beard and hair have dynamic curls, his eyebrows are marked and his cheeks are puffy. Together with his pierced mouth, they suggest the utilitarian and decorative function of our work, which was once part of a fountain. In a playful, theatrical way, our Triton seems to be spitting out the water holding in its cheeks.

In terms of its type and material, this water spout can be compared to the many painted lead sculptures and reliefs with water jets that adorned the gardens and groves of the Château de Versailles and the Marly estate under Louis XIV. More fragile than bronze and requiring costly maintenance, very few of these works have survived the ravages of time. In a poor state of repair from the 18th century onwards, the Revolution contributed to or served as a pretext for their destruction, making our mask a rare testimony to the glory of French gardens under the reign of the Sun King.
